The Site

Grave of St Luke (Lucas)
The Grave of St. Luke can bee seen at the parking lot on the left hand side of the road towards the Magnesia Gate which about 100 meters/330 feet to the parking area.The excavations suggest that the construction dates to 2nd c. AD and the place appears to be a heroon.
Magnesia Gate
The Magnesia Gate was one of the three enterences to Ephesus on the road to the house of Virgin Mary and discovered by J.T. Wood.
Bath of Varius
The Bath of Varius is a 2nd century construction, built of cut marble blocks and consisting of three sections; calidarium (hot), tepidarium (warm), frigidarium (cold).
State Agora
The State Agora was a meeting place and agora for business. The 1st century tempel in the center of the place dedicated to Isis was destroyed during the reign of the Emperor Augustus because of Augustus’ hostility towards Anthony and Cleopatra and anything Egiptian!
Odeon
The Odeon was built by the order of two wealthy citisens of the town, Vedius Antonius and his wife Flavia Paiana(2nd C AD).With the capacity of 1.400 spectators and a stage building it has the shape of a small theatre.The construction was used as a meeting place for political meetings and a concert hall for performances and used to be enclosed with a wooden roof.
Temenos (The Tempels of Dea Roma & Divus Julius Cesar)
Temenos the Emperial Cult erected in the 1st C AD in honor of Augustus’ adoptive father Julius Cesar and of Rome never became a true religion. There was an atlar dedicated to Artemis and Augustus.
Prytaneion
The Prytaneion where the religious ceremonies, official receptions and banquets were held was also known as the house of Hestia. The sacred flame was constantly alight here. The two Artemis statues found here can be seen today in Ephesus Museum.
Domitian Temple
The Domitian Temple is a 1st C AD building and the first temple in Ephesus that dedicated to an emperor.
Fountain of Pollio
The Fountain of Pollio was a 2nd C AD building next to Domitian Temple. It was used for water brougth by the aquedukts and distributed by a branching system of baked clay pipes.
Memmius Monument
The Memmius Monument was a 2nd C AD memorial which was dedicated to memmius the grandson of Dictator Sulla. One can see the figures of sula and his son on the blocks today.
The Hercules Gate
The Hercules Gate is located towards the end of the Curetes Street. On the gate two reliefs of Heracles can be seen depicted with the skin of nemeon lion in mythology.The gate narrowed the acces to the street to prevent the wheeled vehicles into the city. The relief of the flying Nike in Domitian square is thought to be a part of it.
Curetes Street
The Curetes Street lies between the Celsus Library and The Hercules Gate. On both sides of this street there were columns, statues, shops and fountains.
Trajan’s Fountain
The Fountain of Trajan was built in the name of Emperor Trajan and his gigantic statue stood in the central niche. One foot of this statue can stil be seen. The construction was surrounded by columns and statues of Dionysus,Satyr, Aphrodite and the family of the emperor which are now in Ephesus Museum.
Terrace Houses
The Terrace Houses on the curetes street is also called as ‘the houses of rich’. The oldest structures date back to 1st C BC and some of them were used up to 7th C AD . They were luxurious houses with fountains nd central heating.
Scholastica Baths
The Scostica Baths were built in 2nd C AD and restored by a rich Christian Lady named Scholastica in the beginning of the 5th C AD. It was consisted of 4 sections; apoditerium (dressing room), frigidarium (cold room), tepidarium (warm room), and calidarium (hot room).
The Hadrian Temple
The Handrian Temple was built in memory of the Emperor Hadrian. The keystone of the arch has a relief of Tyche, the goddess of fortune and on the gate behind it a relief of a naked female body which thought to be Medusa can be seen.
The Latrines
The Latrines were the public toilets of the city built in 1C AD as a part of scholastica Baths. The toilets are aligned along the walls and there was a drainage system under the toilets.
The Private House
The Private House is on the corner of Curetes Street. Some archeologists clame that this was a brothel with two floors. The construction dates back to 98-117 AD.
Celsus Library
The Celsus Library was built in 117 AD by Gaius JuliusAquila to be a memorial to his father Gaius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus The Proconsul of Asia Province. The grave of Celsus was beneath the ground flor and there was a statue of Athena over it the goddess of wisdom. It was the 2nd riches library of the ancient worl with thw capacity of 12.000 scrolls.
The Mazeus and Mithridates Gate
The Maseus and Mithridates Gate was bulit in 40 AD by the slaves Mazeus and Mithridates for The Emperor Augustus who gave them their freedom.
The Commercial Agora
The Commercial Agora built in 3rd century BC was the center of the commercial world with a doric stoa with two stories and a water-clock and a sundial in the middle.
The Marble Road
The Marble Road lies between the library and the theater.It was part of the sacred road stretching to the Artemis Temple around Mount Pion through the Magnesia Gate.
The Theater
The Theater was originally a 3rd C BC Hellenistic Theatre which was later adapted and expanded in the 1st C AD by the Romans with the capacity of 25.000 seats. Becides concerts and plays it was used for religious and political discussions and gladiator and animal fights also.
The Arcadiane
The Arcadiane also known as the Harbour Street was situated between the harbor and the theater (530m long-11m wide). It was renovated at the beginning of the 5th C AD in memory of Emperor Arcadianus.
